Over the years much has been written, from many different angles, about the important topic of discipleship. I want to expose you to some of these differing approaches. I also want you to have the graduate level experience of writing a serious book review.
In this assignment you have the option of reading one of the three books listed below and writing an 800 to 2,000 word book review.
- Embodying Our Faith by Tim Morey (IVP Books, 2009) -- This is a relatively new book which discusses what it means to make disciples in a postmodern world. In particular he addresses the the role of the local church and the communal aspects of disciplemaking.
- The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer (any edition) -- This is a classic written by the pastor who struggled with what it meant to be a disciple in the chaos of Nazi Germany. Every Christian needs to read this book at some point in his or her life.
- Missional Essentials by Brad Brisco and Lance Ford (The House Studio, 2012) -- This book written is from a missional perspective -- a relatively simple introduction to the concepts of missional theology and a holistic approach to evangelism and discipleship. The intended audience seems to be American, Australian, and Canadian Christians but others will certainly be able to transfer the ideas into their own context.
Grade points (ED Points) will be awarded for your understanding of the book, how well you express your ideas about the book, and how well you are able to follow the instructions given by Dr Belcher in the article.
